Quarantine Grocery Shopping

During this quarantine period which started back in March 16, 2020, one of our greatest concerns is of course FOOD that will sustain us during this time. With limited cash and opportunity to go out to withdraw money, we are very much conscious on how to make it last for essential items that cannot be bought using card (debit/credit) like fresh goods/meat. However, not all items can be bought in a “talipapa” (small market), so we also need to be able to do grocery shopping for all our other dry goods of which can be paid by card (debit/credit).

From social media posts circulating online, we can see that going to a supermarket would be a challenging task which will require to allocate not less than 3 hours to do. Another concern of course is the worry about practicing social distancing and trying to avoid the spread or acquiring virus while we are out.

This is then where technology comes in with all the online grocery shopping being launched immediately after the quarantine started.  Let me share with you some of the online grocery shopping options I have considered and/or ordered from during this time (starting in early April 2020) and until we are still in the quarantine period.

1)   Healthy Options Online

Platform: Web

Delivery Area: METRO MANILA, Cainta, and Antipolo only

Delivery Fee: Free shipping with P5,000 purchase

Minimum purchase: P1,500

Shipping Time: Within 3 business days

PROS:

Ø  Good place to buy vitamins and organic essential items (ie. fresh and dry goods, beverages)

Ø  Selections are based on what is in stock

CONS:

Ø  They are a bit on the pricey side for essential items like food since they are organic and deemed healthy

PERSONAL THOUGHTS:

-        I love Healthy Options! They are a go-to place whenever I need to buy my vitamins and muesli.

-       They also launched their online shop around the time that I am looking for online grocery store – April 2, 2020.

-        However, I opted not to order grocery items from them for now as they are above my budget.

2)    Landers

Platform: Web

Delivery Area: Specific delivery areas - https://www.landers.ph/delivery-areas

Delivery Fee: P99 / Free shipping with P6,000 purchase

Personal Shopper Fee: P99

PROS:

Ø  They have a wide variety of choices from fresh and dry goods, to bakery, vitamins, household items, etc

Ø  They also offer items in bulk or big sizes

Ø  Selections are based on what is in stock

*This at the time that I was trying to order groceries early April 2020. As of this writing, they now have a note that their replenishment of stock is affected by the quarantine, and some of the items selected may or may not be available upon delivery.

CONS:

Ø  They have limited delivery date and slot

*This at the time that I was trying to order groceries, and I was monitoring the site daily for more than a week. As of this writing, they currently have available date and slots.

Ø  You need to be an existing member or would need to apply for a membership upon shopping online. Membership Fee is P600.

Ø  They have limited delivery area depending on store locations

PERSONAL THOUGHTS:

-        I’m not yet a member of Landers prior the quarantine period. However, they do have the option to register as a member when you shop online and include the charge in your cart.

-        I did not order from them at the time as there is no delivery date and slot available, and I was able to order from the next option below.

-        Will reconsider again next time.

3)    Waltermart Delivery

Platform: Web and Mobile

Delivery Area: Specific delivery areas of store location - https://www.waltermartdelivery.com.ph/my-store/store-locator

Delivery Fee: P99 Flat rate

Minimum purchase: P2,000

PROS:

Ø  They have a wide variety of choices from fresh and dry goods, to bakery, household items, appliance, etc

CONS:

Ø  The item/brand selected may or may no longer be available at the time of delivery

*They will automatically readjust the charged amount if you are using a credit card.

Ø  They have limited delivery date and slot

*This at the time that I was trying to order groceries, and I was monitoring the site daily for more than a week. As of this writing, they currently have available date and slots.

Ø  They have limited delivery area depending on store locations

PERSONAL THOUGHTS:

-       This is where I ended up ordering our first batch of delivery items. However, I had to had it delivered to a friend’s place in Makati since they don’t deliver in Manila (bordering Makati) where I am located. I then had them sent over to our house via Lalamove for P104. So basically, I paid for P99 + P104 for delivery. And I had to inconvenience my friends, who put extra effort in processing the delivery of the groceries from their place.

-      When I was able to catch an open delivery date and time, it was scheduled at 2 weeks (April 16) from the time of order (April 2). This is not favorable if you will be ordering at a time when your stock at home is already low.

-     We are not sure which items will be delivered. So, we just basically rely on whatever is the available stock from what we have ordered.

-    Overall, Waltermart is also a good option for online grocery shopping. My only concern really is the delivery option since they don’t deliver straight to our doorsteps.

4)   Lazmart

Platform: Web and Mobile

Delivery Area: Selected areas in Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna and Batangas

Delivery Fee: P250

Minimum purchase: N/A

Shipping Time: They will provide estimated date and time

PROS:

Ø  Selections are based on what is in stock

CONS:

Ø  They only have dry goods and they don’t have fresh or frozen goods.

Ø  They don’t have a lot of variety to choose from.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS:

-       This is where I order the rest of our groceries. 😊

-     I have ordered from their platform twice already and both are immediately delivered way before the estimated delivery date.

1st – Ordered: April 29 and Delivered: May 3 (supposedly May 2 but they didn’t make it due to the curfew)

2nd – Ordered: May 3 and Delivered: May 4

-       What you order is what you get since the selection is based on the actual available inventory.

-       They are delivered very well in Lazada boxes and straight into our home.

2nd batch from Lazmart (except Gardenia)

For us, what really worked well for our location (Manila, Metro Manila) would be Lazmart. It was the one who can deliver straight to our doorstep and offers item based on what is in stock so there will be no surprises. Though they don’t have fresh goods and frozen item, this can be easily supplemented by the “talipapa” near our place which is also the preferred option for fresh goods.

However, what worked for me may or may not work for you. For others, what will work for you may differ depending on your location and your personal preference. But, I hope the above list will help you in a way to decide for your options. 😊
